Most patient’s weight related health problems, such as high blood pressure, diabetes and sleep apnoea, significantly improve after weight loss surgery.

Types of Weight Loss Surgery

Bariatric surgeries are permanent, non-reversible procedures that help you lose weight alongside a new lifestyle that includes a healthy diet and exercise. No matter what surgery you choose, our team will be right alongside you to help you adjust to your new lifestyle habits after surgery.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Requires a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 35 – can be lower if comorbidities present.

A gastric sleeve limits food intake and reduces the production of the hunger hormone, ghrelin, which changes the way that patients feel hunger. Typically performed as a laparoscopic surgery, a gastric sleeve (sleeve gastrectomy) removes around 80% of the stomach to create a tube or sleeve-like structure.

This bariatric surgery permanently makes a smaller stomach and requires a specific diet plan to have a safe and effective recovery. Recovery time takes between 6-8 weeks and typically requires 1-2 weeks off of work.

Gastric Bypass Surgery

requires a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 35 – can be lower if comorbidities present

A roux-en-y gastric bypass surgery creates a new structure out of the existing stomach to create a small pouch. It bypasses a portion of the stomach in order to reduce the amount of food you can eat at any one time to help you lose weight. It effectively re-plumbs the stomach.

It’s a major operation and should be carefully considered. The expected weight loss is up to 70% of your excess weight within the first two years. Recovery time takes between 6-8 weeks and typically 1-2 weeks off of work.

Mini Gastric Bypass

A mini gastric bypass operation works by reducing the size of the available stomach without removing anything. It relies on a series of alterations to the stomach that can be likened to ‘plumbing.’ It doesn’t cut through the bowel or small intestine, and as such, there is a reduced risk for a hernia and it results in a faster recovery. Recovery time takes between 6-8 weeks and typically requires 1-2 weeks off of work.

Weight Loss Surgery Aftercare

Following your surgery, all patients will receive our renowned aftercare service, which includes two years of contact with your surgeon, nurses, and our Registered dietitians. They will be with you every step of the way while you’re losing weight after your surgery, helping you to recover, form new eating habits, and introduce physical activity into your day-to-day to help you have a healthier lifestyle.

What is a Gastric Bypass?

The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass involves creating a smaller ‘pouch’ from your stomach and attaching it straight to your intestines, bypassing the main body of your stomach.

What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?

The most widely used measurement for obesity. The BMI approximates body mass using a mathematical ratio of weight and height [(weight in kg ÷ height in meters) or (weight in pounds ÷ height in inches x 703)]. A BMI of 30 or more is regarded by most health agencies as the threshold for obesity. A BMI of 40 or more generally qualifies as morbid obesity. However, note that BMI measurements in body-builders and athletes may not be accurate determinants of obesity because the BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat.
