UNDERSTAND YOUR TREATMENT
What is gastric sleeve?
A sleeve gastrectomy removes approximately 80% of the stomach, leaving a narrow, tube-shaped stomach. Food continues along its usual route through the bowel. The smaller stomach helps reduce meal size, while changes in appetite signals can help you feel less hungry.
At a glance
- A permanent reduction in stomach size
- No intestinal bypass
- Often performed with laparoscopic keyhole surgery
- Long-term nutrition, supplements and blood monitoring remain important
What it can help with
For suitable patients, a gastric sleeve can support substantial weight loss and improvement in obesity-related health conditions. Your starting health, eating patterns and follow-up all influence the outcome.
Sleeve surgery cannot be reversed because part of the stomach is removed. Acid reflux may develop or worsen, so significant existing reflux needs careful assessment before choosing a sleeve.
PUBLISHED STUDY RESULTS
25.2%
Average total body weight loss at one year in the PCORnet cohort study.
What results can I expect?
Your consultant discusses a realistic outcome based on your starting weight, health and the selected operation. Results vary; no operation guarantees a particular weight or prevents all future weight regain.
When comparing published results, check whether a figure means total body weight loss or excess weight loss. They use different starting points and should not be read as the same percentage.
Allure helps you track more than the scale: nutrition, recovery, wellbeing and clinically monitored health changes.
A large US observational study reported 25.2% mean total weight loss at one year for gastric sleeve. These are study averages, not Allure service results or an individual prediction. The study was not randomised and had some missing follow-up data. Read the PCORnet study.
How does it compare with other surgery?
If reflux is a major concern, your surgeon may discuss Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. The right choice also depends on your health, previous treatment, eating patterns and nutritional needs.

YOUR JOURNEY, LED BY ALLURE

We begin with health, medication and previous-treatment history. Your consultant explains suitable operations, alternatives and risks. Your Allure team guides nutrition, tests and the preparation plan.
02 · Surgery & recovery
Your operation takes place in a licensed hospital. The surgeon and hospital team manage anaesthesia, surgery and discharge. Allure supports your transition into the recovery and diet plan.
03 · Build & maintain
Your Allure nurses and dietitians guide food progression, symptoms and new habits. Structured follow-up supports weight, nutrition and metabolic health over the next two years.
INDIVIDUAL CLINICAL ASSESSMENT
Am I suitable for weight-loss surgery?
BMI is part of the assessment, alongside obesity-related health problems, past treatment, reflux, nutritional health and ability to engage with follow-up. International guidance recommends surgery at BMI 35 or above, and consideration at BMI 30–34.9 in selected clinical circumstances.
These are guidance thresholds, not automatic eligibility or local insurance criteria. Your UAE consultant confirms the appropriate pathway and any facility requirements. Revision is assessed according to the previous operation and current problem.
READY FOR THE NEXT STEP
What happens before surgery?
- Consultant assessment and informed consent
- Blood tests and other investigations as clinically indicated
- Dietitian review and an individual preparation plan
- Medication, smoking and anaesthetic-risk review
- A liver-reduction diet if prescribed by your team
- Clear fasting, admission and discharge instructions
Follow your team’s written instructions. Do not stop medicines or begin a restrictive pre-operative diet without their advice.
A PRACTICAL PREPARATION PLAN
Getting ready for surgery and home recovery
Why a liver-reduction diet?
The liver sits over the stomach. If your team prescribes a short pre-operative diet, its purpose is to reduce liver size and improve surgical access. This is a preparation step, not the diet to continue after surgery.
Your dietitian provides the duration and food plan. Your clinical team reviews diabetes medicines and other prescriptions where needed. Arrange transport, help at home and your follow-up appointments before admission.
In hospital & the first days
Surgical bariatric procedures usually involve general anaesthesia. The hospital team monitors recovery, pain control, hydration and any signs of complications. Your surgeon confirms when discharge is appropriate.
Start gentle movement as advised and follow the prescribed plan for medicines, fluids and food texture. Return to driving, work, lifting and exercise needs individual guidance. Ask for help early if pain, vomiting or poor fluid intake interrupts recovery.
RECOVERY, STEP BY STEP
Your diet after weight-loss surgery
Food texture changes gradually while your stomach heals. Your Allure dietitian explains what to eat, how much and when to move to the next stage.
STAGE 1Smooth liquidsSmall, regular sips. Prioritise hydration and suitable protein-rich fluids.Examples
Suitable protein shake; milk; smooth, strained nourishing soup.
STAGE 2Puréed foodsSmooth, lump-free textures in small portions, introduced when approved.Examples
Smooth blended lentils, or chicken blended with broth. No lumps, skins or seeds.
STAGE 3Soft foodsSoft, moist meals. Eat slowly and chew thoroughly.Examples
Soft scrambled egg; moist flaky fish; well-cooked, fork-mashed vegetables.
STAGE 4Regular texturesGradual return to balanced meals, with a long-term protein and portion plan.Examples
A small balanced meal: suitable protein, cooked vegetables and a modest carbohydrate portion.
Your plan sets the pace. Timing varies with the operation and recovery. Follow the written hospital and Allure dietitian plan; do not advance a stage if you cannot tolerate it. This surgical pathway is different from a gastric balloon recovery plan.
Recover at your own pace
Your team helps you adapt to a much smaller stomach: slow meals, careful chewing, small portions and a gradual change in food texture. Persistent reflux or difficulty swallowing needs review rather than simply changing your diet.
Length of hospital stay and return to work, driving and exercise depend on your operation, recovery and job. Your clinical team confirms the plan before discharge.
Nutrition for the long term
- Follow the prescribed vitamin and mineral plan
- Prioritise protein and hydration
- Attend blood tests and clinical reviews
- Build regular activity when cleared
- Seek help early for persistent symptoms
The two-year programme supports your start; supplementation and appropriate clinical monitoring remain a lifelong commitment after bariatric surgery.

Benefits matter. So does understanding the risks.
All bariatric operations carry risks, including bleeding, infection, blood clots, anaesthetic complications and leaks. Specific concerns include leakage or bleeding along the staple line, narrowing of the sleeve, reflux and nutritional deficiencies. Your consultant explains the risks relevant to your operation and health before consent.
Seek urgent medical care for severe or worsening abdominal or chest pain, breathing difficulty, fever, a racing heart, repeated vomiting, inability to keep fluids down, vomiting blood, black stools or one-sided calf swelling.
In a medical emergency in the UAE, call 998. Contact Allure for ongoing recovery support, but do not wait for a WhatsApp reply in an emergency.
How much does gastric sleeve cost in Dubai?
The cost depends on the operation, hospital, consultant assessment, investigations and care included. Revision costs also depend on the previous anatomy and complexity of the planned procedure.
Allure provides a personalised programme quote after assessment. We explain the hospital treatment, preparation and aftercare included, and any exclusions or additional costs, so you can make an informed decision.
Gastric Sleeve FAQs
The choice depends on your medical history, weight-related conditions, reflux, nutrition and previous treatment. A consultant assessment compares benefits, risks and alternatives before any recommendation.
No. Part of the stomach is permanently removed. In selected circumstances the sleeve may be converted to another procedure, but that does not restore the removed stomach.
Your team discusses an individual outcome range. Starting weight, the operation and engagement with nutritional care influence progress. Published total body weight loss and excess weight loss figures measure different things.
Your team gives you a staged progression from liquids through purées and soft food to suitable regular textures. Timing depends on healing and tolerance. Follow your written clinical plan rather than a fixed online deadline.
Yes. Allure manages preparation, nurse and dietitian support and your structured two-year clinical aftercare programme. The surgeon and licensed hospital provide the operative care.
Yes. Long-term vitamin and mineral supplementation and regular nutritional blood monitoring are important after bariatric surgery. Your clinical team tailors the plan to the procedure and your results.
Weight recurrence can occur. Seek a clinical review of nutrition, habits, medicines and anatomy. Further medical, nutritional, endoscopic or surgical treatment may be considered; revision is not automatic.
Allure provides a personalised written quote after assessment, outlining the operation, hospital care and programme inclusions. Your team explains any exclusions and additional investigations or treatment costs.
