The Wegovy® pill contains semaglutide—the same active ingredient used in Wegovy® injection—but it is taken by mouth and follows its own specific dose and administration pathway.

One format is not automatically better for every patient. Your doctor will consider clinical suitability, treatment preference, current medication and your ability to follow the administration instructions correctly.
How Do I Take the Wegovy® Pill?
Correct administration is important because it affects how the medication is absorbed. Unless your prescribing clinician gives different locally applicable instructions, the Wegovy® pill should be:
- Taken once daily in the morning on an empty stomach
- Swallowed whole with plain water only, up to approximately 120 ml
- Taken at least 30 minutes before food, other drinks or other oral medication
- Kept whole—not split, crushed, chewed or dissolved
If a dose is missed, do not take two pills together. Follow the instructions supplied with your medication and contact your clinical team if you are unsure.
Who May Be Suitable?
The Wegovy® pill may be considered for adults who:
- A BMI of 30 or above; or
- A BMI of 27 or above with at least one weight-related health condition
- Prefer an oral treatment to a weekly injection; and
- Are able to follow the daily administration instructions consistently
Suitability cannot be determined from BMI alone. Your doctor must review your health, current medication, previous GLP-1 treatment, relevant personal and family history and any factors that may make semaglutide unsuitable
How Wegovy® Treatment Works
Treatment begins at a low oral dose and is increased gradually to improve tolerability. The licensed dose pathway progresses through different tablet strengths towards the maintenance dose.
Dose escalation is directed by the prescribing doctor. Your clinician may keep you at a dose for longer if you are experiencing side effects or if a slower increase is clinically appropriate. You should never increase the dose yourself.
There is no officially defined maximum time limit for treatment, and it may be continued as long as it is effective and well-tolerated.

In the OASIS 4 clinical study, adults taking once-daily oral semaglutide 25 mg alongside diet and physical activity achieved:
Approximately 13.6% average weight reduction at 64 weeks when results included participants regardless of whether they remained on treatment; and
Approximately 16.6% average weight reduction at 64 weeks in the analysis assuming participants remained on treatment

Both contain semaglutide, but they are different branded products with different approved uses, dose pathways and product information. Your doctor will prescribe the specific product appropriate for your circumstances.
Treatment generally starts at 0.25 mg once weekly and may be increased gradually through higher strengths. Your doctor decides when and whether the dose should change.
Clinical study participants receiving weekly semaglutide 2.4 mg with lifestyle intervention lost approximately 15% of their initial weight on average over 68 weeks. Individual results vary and are not guaranteed.
